Boiler FAQ
- Is the boiler pressurized or non-pressurized? All boilers are UL listed as pressurized boilers.
- Is the boiler ASME rated? Yes, all of our boiler tanks are ASME certified.
- What is ASME? American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) - a professional society that sets the standards for mechanical devices.
- Can I install the unit outdoors? No, these units are rated for indoor applications only and can not be installed directly outside. If you wish to install it outdoors, you will need to provide an enclosure to protect the unit from the elements. You will also need to add a low water cut out switch to the boiler.
- Are there special piping concerns? Yes, all units must be on a primary/secondary pumping system with the primary pump running 24/7. Or they must have a dedicated dump zone to prevent overheating on long periods of idle time.
- How often must I clean the flue tubes? LDJ recommends once a month or as needed.
- Can I hook a thermostat to the boiler? LDJ prefers no thermostats attached directly to the boiler.
- Can I do infloor heat? With a properly designed system you can do infloor heating. LDJ recommends the use of a buffer storage tank with infloor heat systems to prevent low return water temperatures from entering the boiler.
- Can I connect the boiler to a gas or electric furnace?
By utilizing a field supplied hot water coil you can add this to your existing furnace or air handler. - What size pipe should I use? LDJ recommends using 1-1/2 pipe for your primary loop.
- How big of a pump do I need?
Pumping size will need to be sized for your application. LDJ recommends a pump that can move 1 gpm for every ten thousand BTUs of your appliance. - Which holes do I use? The very top holes are for supply and the very bottom holes are for return. The middle holes are for inspection and cannot be used. You will need a minimum of one supply and one return.
- Does the boiler require an expansion tank? Yes, an expansion tank is required.
- How many gallons of water does the tank hold? 18 gallons.
- Can I use the boiler as a hot water heater?
No, these units are not to be used as a direct heating source for portable water. You may incorporate a water to water heat exchanger or a side arm heat exchanger to supplement your current hot water heater. - What is the minimum return water temperature? The minimum required return water temperature is 140°F.
